by Jameson Cult Film Club Team

We said that we were going to put the choice of this season’s last screening in your hands, and we have done just that.

Together with our friends at Empire we have come up with a choice of three cult Sci-Fi movies, to screen at the Royal Institute, in London on St Patrick’s Day, March 17.

Many of you will recognise the venue from their Christmas Lectures, which are televised from the lecture hall every year. What you may not realise is that this fantastic venue has also been the home to some of the most prestigious scientific minds in the UK (including Michael Faraday), and some of the most important scientific discoveries of the last two decades were made within its very walls.

The venue will be dressed to complement the winning film; you will be surrounded by science wonders such as Faraday’s working lab in the basement for pre-screening drinks, before heading up into the famous lecture hall for the screening itself, followed by an after-party in the upstairs rooms of the Institute.

What better way to celebrate Ireland’s most notable Saint, than by joining us at the Jameson Cult Film Club to enjoy a glass of Jameson whilst watching a cult classic in a truly memorable location?

So that leaves one final thing, the film itself! Below are the three films that are on offer for you to decide over, head over to Empire today. Your choices are as follows:

Donnie Darko [IMDB link - click on the movie title] – You say cult Sci-Fi and a lot of people will think of this film straight away. This dark and haunting film has left many of us with shivers down the spine. It is the film that launched Jake Gyllenhaal into superstardom and gave us ‘Mad World’ as Christmas number one; factor in Patrick Swayze’s inspired performance and we couldn’t dream of not having it on our cult Sci-Fi shortlist.

War Of The Worlds (1953) [IMDB link - click on the movie title] – We know, we know! The world has almost forgotten how great this film was thanks to a certain remake. That is exactly why we think this is a perfect time to press re-set and give people the chance to watch one of the most prominent Sci-Fi films of all time. This film was a huge success when it came out, and won Oscars for its special effects. It set the stage for a whole raft of Sci-Fi films that followed in its wake and certainly deserves to be remembered for the cult classic it is.

Moon [IMDB link - click on the movie title] – Even though this is a recent release and one of the most popular Sci-fi films of 2009, we think that this film deserves its place on our list as it takes its soul from those old cult Sci-Fi classics of the past. We firmly believe that in years to come it will be featured amongst the top cult Sci-Fi films of this decade – the acting is superb and the concept is striking and simple. We love this film.

The decision is in your hands, so do us proud.
