Loan paid off - got statement - is it correct?

this is a long story but i will try make it brief..

in Aug05 my ex partner & I took out a secured loan against our house for total value of £35,900, Dec 05 my ex partner died very unexpectedly. I called the loan company - sent the death cert etc.

I eventually sold the house & then had to pay off the entire loan in July06, meanwhile admin charges & interest accumulated. Even given the accumulated interest I ended up paying 8K more than the value of the loan.

In 2008/09 I did some investigating for two reasons - the loan i believed i'd signed for was £12k - somehow my ex had altered the papers or forged my signature - but that is apparently a dead end. However i did query the difference in loan value against settlement fee which was paid via my solicitor £43k. After a lot of questions they refunded £700 of interest, then after more questions I was told I was overcharged also by £1500 on the early repayment fee which was also refunded. (My solicitor has been an utter waste of time & zero help).

Recently i've been looking into if there was any PPI - there wasn't any - but as i've got the statement again I've been looking at it. I have all the terms etc but still can't figure it out?

There was a Solicitor intermin fee, a solicitor discharge fee etc. I have the settlement of the account & i can't really understand it - and still can't understand the remaining difference vs loan amount.

Because ive asked a lot of questions already on two occasions & been given 2refunds - i can't help but question if there is anything else i've overpaid?

Any thoughts on how i could check? This is nagging away at me & any money i can recoup for my son is precious!

    Emotionally?

Its funny how the OP wasnt so aware of these discrepancies when she signed the loan, or had the money.

In fact its rather convenient that they can say what they want, accuse the deceased partner of fraud and try and get out of paying the full obligations at their own profit.

Not entirely disagreeing with you but it has been known for partners/hubbys to fraudulently sign loan agreements. You don't know the full history before they died. I'm speaking from experience and my ex is still very much alive... I fought and won against the fradulent loans he'd taken out in my name!

I think the op has every right to exhaust every avenue of enquiry...they have, after all, paid it back already.

Yes you're right. It never happens in real life that someone pulls a bit of a fast one and it only comes out when something unexpected happens. I thought I was a cynic but you really do take the biscuit.

I love the "devils advocate" point of view you bring to certain threads, sometimes its needed very much, but I do wonder what on earth has happened in your life to make you so unreservedly bitter about every little thing.

Anihilator - clearly you feel obliged to provoke reaction or perhaps you get a kick from these sort of posts. In fact what exactly was the point of your post?

For your information my ex partner took his own life after a drug addiction & debt problem, we were seperated & I knew signing the loan in the first place was risky, but given the scenario at the time i felt it could have been life saving. After investigation i was advised to involve the fraud department/police - however given my ex was deceased nothing could be recouped unless it was taken from his estate - and therefore from my sons pitiful inheritance.

So I'm interested why do you find the emotional element of my situation questionable?? I have fought tooth & nail to make a life for my son & I - including paying off this loan - all 43k it - of which i got not one single penny, which is verified by the fact that the loan was paid solely to him.

I have found this site an invaluable resource of assistance along the way. It's just such a shame people like you exist, you add no value whatsoever.

Perhaps your posts make up for some sort of failing in your own life which make you feel big & clever? You are not just thoughtless, cynical and rude but offensive in the extreme. I am sure there are many other describing words that could be attributed to your personality (try d*ck head).

@Hairbrain - best wishes to you. I can't add to any financial advice but would say that the dipstick Anihilator doesn't know his own name should be spelled with a double 'n'. :rotfl:
  • To OP was there no Life cover taken out to cover secured loan?
