    A couple of points to add:
    - was she employed through an agency? It sounds like the employer was the company she was working for, but her wages were paid by the agency they would be deemed as being her employer.

    - has the junior person going to be replaced? If they have simply changed their role (even given a promotion) it will be difficult to argue that there was a job that could have been offered to your wife. In theory the role would have been made redundant and the person offered a new position, although probably in practice they have simply changed their job. (hope it makes sense).

    I think it would have been fool of any employer to give a permanent contract to someone who was about to go off for several months and cost them money, with no certainty that they would actually not decide to be a stay-at-home mum.
    It stinks but that's the reality.
