Party for a four year old girl

Well I've decided to put a party on for my little girl on 20th for her 4th Bday. It was spontaneous so now need to work on the details. Although I have 2 chldren this is the first time I have done a party. I've ordered some Dora invites off ebay and wondered if I should go for a Dora theme party?

I was a bit worried as our house is quite small but thought I would do some traditional games such as Musical statues and pass the parcel. I will obviously do some nibbles and a cake but what else to fill the time?

I was thinking 2 hours but is this to long? My little is so excited I want to make it the best I can whilst being on a bit of a budget :-)

I think a Dora themed party is a nice idea, theres plenty of stuff in the like of Asda, like paper plates etc. They also have that lovely donkey pinata (sp) it would tie in well with the Dora theme and can take a while for it to break, so it will keep the kids occupied for a bit longer.
I had a 4th party for my dd last year and the party was an hour and a half, I felt this was long enough as the kids were getting tired around that time. Most parties my dd has been to have also been around the 1 1/2 hour mark.

Wilkinsons quite often have Dora party stuff in, I got the table cover last year. I wouldn't bother with the plates unless you can get them cheap as they don't notice, just get a plain colour instead. You can print off colouring sheets from the internet which passes some of the time and the other thing I did was decorating brown paper bags. These are the handled lunch bag type, from Quality Save. The children decorated them with stickers etc and then I used them for their party bags.

I bought mini sports bottles of water when they were on a special and put a sticker with each childs name on, no spills and less passing around of any bugs any child might have.

Musical statues and pass the parcel are both good ones as they don't get too giddy, a sticker or something similar between each layer keeps the non winners happy as well.

I agree with the other posts 1.5 hours is plenty and with the two games, an activity like colouring or similar and food and that will be your time gone. I would avoid opening presents whilst the other children are there as children aren't always that tactful?

Watch the time you are having the party, I would say late morning till early afternoon is your best as the children aren't flagging and cranky. Any sugar rushes can also be burnt off by bedtime.

For the cake I made cupcakes which I just decorated in buttercream type icing. I printed off Dora pictures from the internet that were about 2 inches high and laminated them. I then cut them out leaving a spike of laminate at the bottom to stick in each cake. The children seemed to love them and they had them for their pudding, no hassle with cutting the cake and wrapping it to take home.

Make sure you have enough drinks in for adults as well as alot will want to stay at that age I imagine.

Good luck and enjoy, don't get stressed as children are happy just playing with a balloon if all else fails.

My little sis was 3 last year and had a Dora theme. The Dora cakes were so expensive so I copied a pic from the internet & edited it in Word to say "Happy Birthday Ella" I then sent the pic to a person on Ebay who makes cake toppers. They sent it through the post and we simply added it on to one of the "create your own" cakes from Asda. They have the advantage of being much bigger than the Dora cakes and cheaper too.

We bought a Dora tablecloth from Ebay it was yellow & orange and then just bought plain yellow paper plates to keep in with the theme. We didn't bother buying cups for drinks as there was an offer on in Asda of 24 cup drinks for £2.

Right thats settled then, we'll definately go with the Dora theme. I've been looking on Ebay for Dora Tablecloths, party bags and Cake toppers. I think I may just buy a cake as I'm lazy. Also I'll just have plain plates and use Fruitshoots (pound shop) for drinks to save on spillages as suggested above! I might make a banner as I like painting and obviously we'll have ballons but what other touches can I do do make it extra special?

I'm going to just invite about 6 or 7 kids and hope the parents don't all stay cos my house is not very big at all! I never stop at parties, I can't wait to get out of there!

    Whats donkey pinata?

So do you think 12pm will be okay?

My sister has just organised a DORA themed party for my niece - also 4 and whilst we couldn't make it I think it sounded awesome.

She made fajitas using tuna & cucumber etc... Chicken and something else

She had a quest like in one of the stories. She went to light the birthday candles on the cake but couldn't find the cake... She found a note from Swiper the Fox - he had swiped the cake! All the kids (40+) had to follow the clues to find the cake with my niece heading up the treasure hunt. She used a lot of picture clues to get the kids to look in diff places. It was hidden amongst the birthday presents in a treasure chest. Apparently it was amazing and not too difficult to put together but like I say I didn't see it. It didn't really cost anything to put together either.

Hope you have fun - my sister sure did!
