What do people think of this Pay Rate (Interview Thur)

Hi all,

Applied for a IT related job a few weeks back and had a phone call today regarding coming to an interview on Fri this week. Just had the email with the interview details on but it states this rates of pay below and i would like peoples views on this as i am not sure if i will be wasting my time and money.

Job Details:

The job would entail working as a self employed Engineer, working over 6 days a week.

You will be given approximately 5-6 jobs per day, installing and resolving service faults.

You will be paid £95 per day for the first 3 months, then £100 per day after.

You will be working as a self employed Engineer so will have to pay for your own fuel.

You will have £120 deducted from your weekly wage for rental of the vehicle, insurance cover (which is done automatically and will be stated on your invoice).

Working as a self employed Engineer you will be responsible for arranging you own income tax which is 18% compared to PAYE which is 33%.

Training:

Training will consist of 2 weeks.

One week within a classroom environment,(Staples Corner in London) and a further week out in the field with a current Engineer (within your area).

Training pay will be £45 a day.

hmmm....I don't like the sound of it personally. "Approximately 5-6 jobs a day" is not very specific, if you only end up getting 1 or 2 and they take £120 a week....you are paying for vehicle rental & you have to pay for fuel as well? Alarm bells are ringing for me...

It's just all a bit wooly and vague for my liking, won't be great if you live near staples corner & send you to jobs in Leeds and have to pay for your own fuel. If you are going to be self employed why would they be giving you a flat rate per day instead of paying you by the job?

If I were you I would ask one hell of a lot of questions at the interview....

  • My thought was also as i live up Midlands and have to go down to london for training for 1 Week who pays for the cost as i am sure £45 a day would not cover for travel from up here and someware to stay

So its £95 a day, but you have to give up £120 a week? You then have to make an allowance for tax and NI, or risk a bill from HMRC, so allow around 25%.
Where do they get the figures for income tax from? PAYE is not 33%

All sounds a bit fishy to me.

  • I don't like the sound of it either. Just saying that you must be self employed may not satisfy HMRC. It seems that you will be treated as an employee without getting any benefits such as holidays and sick pay.

Self employed people choose their own work, hours and rates of pay and in general set their own terms.

Beware IR 35, where HMRC will say that you should be classed as employed. Depending on mileage with associated fuel costs and insurance (public liability probably won't be included in the vehicle package) and allowing for tax you could be doing 12 -14 hour days for £300 or less per week.

They are charging over £6,000 a year for vehicle rental, that sounds excessive even with insurance included unless it is a high end vehicle. Also ask if that includes VAT, I'm 90% certain that will be an ex VAT figure.

As others have pointed out you won't get paid the usual 5.6 weeks holiday or any sick pay which can add up to a lot of money.

The self employed option seems to give them too much advantage, I reckon 6 commercial jobs a day plus travelling between each one could result in a very long day, plus if they haven't got any work on I doubt they will pay you.
  • I have told them i wont be atending the Interview on Fri but i have another Interview with a UK wide company on Thur

    Thanks for the Reply

Sounds like a scam to me.
If people want you to do a job for them they pay YOU, if they want you to pay THEM, in this case an extortionate amount for the car, then it's does not sound right!
