Cleaning my MP3's headphone lead

Not sure which board this post should be on - hopefully I've got it right!

I have a white MP3 player. The player is kept in a protective case so is nice and clean. However the headphone jack is very dirty as a result of being stuffed in pockets and bags etc.

I want to get this back to being white from grey! I have tried using some stardrops to clean it and also alcohol wipes with no luck. Please can anyone advise me on the best way to get it clean?
