I know people who've just chucked them in the washing machine and they've come out ok, obviously depends on what machine you have though. I think I'd be too paranoid about putting my beloved Converse in the machine though!

be very careful about putting them in the washing machine. Never use a temperature above 30 or you can cook the rubber & ruin them.

For my white Dunlop green flash (yes Im proper old school) I took out the inner soles & threw em in a bucket of warm water with a cupful of biological detergent. Wear gloves & swish em about a bit. You can give the canvas bits a bit of a scrub with a soft-ish nail brush if you like. The biological powder cleans the rubber really well & usually improves the canvas a lot. Rinse really really well. Drying can take ages as you must NOT tumble dry or put them in a radiator. When mine got just too grubby to be rescued I dyed them navy blue. Jobs a good'un ;)

Whenever i've washed trainers in the machine I use the hand wash setting at 30c. The drum just rocks back and forth and doesn't spin round. Never washed any of my daughter's Converse in them though.
  • I put my granddaughters Converse in the washing machine.
    They come out fine.
One particular pair has been in about 15 times now.
I just put them in on delicates,30c in a sealed washbag and they're fine.
Just let them dry naturally AWAY from any heat source.
  • In the old days I used to clean my fabric trainers with a white cream shoe cleaner from Clarks .... worked a treat.
However I would also use a wee bit of bleach on a toothbrush - discaimer: I haven't tried that before but it's what I would do IYKWIM?!

    Good luck

I have a trainers wash on the washing machine, it rocks the drum rather than rotating it and froths up my powder, my daughters converse have come out lovely and clean!!

DS2's Converse went in the wash after a particularly muddy Glastonbury - after being hosed down in the back garden!

Always wash on delicates, 30 degrees & gentle spin, then allow them to dry naturally (although DS2 tucks his behind a radiator to dry if he needs them quickly!)

I'm a fan of shoving them in the washing machine - my boy's pairs go in with washable floor rugs etc, so they don't bang about too much. I do take the laces out first and pop them in a delicates bag first.

I wash trainers and sneaker hi-tops in the machine all the time. Keep the temp and wash time low and throw in some old towels too. The towels create a scrubbing action on the shoes and help balance the load so you don't have that banging noise and a drum that will not spin. HTH

I do the same with trainers and towels :D (and sometimes the doggies soft toys)

I still have trainers that are nine years old and very well worn which have been in the washing machine numerous times and still look almost as good as new.
