When is good old money saving being tight fisted?

What an interesing post!
I agree with others, it becomes tight-fisted when you start harming your relationship with others. Being mean and "not paying your way" is fine, as long as you don't expect others to pick up the tab, as they will notice, and you'll find yourself getting fewer invitations.
I cultivate my reputation as being eccentric, and have big plans of eccentricity as I'm older (involving a range of purple hats and a pig on a string.........). My friends, threrefore, indulge my OS ways. I often return home to find bags of waste wood, and even whole trees, as people know I will burn them on my fire. People who don't recycle as a habit, are happy for me to take away there bottles and cans when I go for supper. I'm no longer seen as odd when I take my own plate and glass to a party where paper plates and cups are provided (yes, I do take them home to wash!).
I keep flirting with other sections of MSE, but apart from "a bit on the side" with Green and Ethical", I love OS, as I feel so at home, with like minded people, and however eccentric I appear, I've not yet felt out of place.
Thanks, OSers!
Penny. x
PS, recycling hoover bags may seem good sense, but may be false economy in the long run. They are designed to let air through, and repeated use will clog them, and may lead to expensive hoover repairs (motor overheating, for example). Same goes for filters in Dysons. I use washable filters, so change them often, to keep the Dyson in good shape.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
My step father questions my mum if she puts a first class stamp on a letter when a second class would do yet he refuses to do any forward planning for inheritance tax.
He says it's his money and what happens when he's gone wont bother him.
Tight fisted but other names fit betterLove living in a village in the country side0 -
Mm - I understand that, wellies. Not very caring of him towards your Mum.The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

I feel tightfisted because i have seriously cut down the amount of cash i have been giving my 16 year old. I want him to get a part time job because hes got no interest in supporting himself and would prefer to accept handouts. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i have a friend who travels for work all the time , who has never bought a bar of soap, a bottle of shampoo, conditioner etc in 15 years because she takes it all from hotels - now this doesnt sound too bad to me - BUT she also takes toilet rolls - that, imho, crosses a line and becomes tight fisted lol
i also think my sister and her hubby are tight fisted - at least twice a month they visit me and my dad , with their two kids, and i cook steaks and salad/baked potatoes, provide a couple of bottles of ( allbeit cheapish ) wine etc
recently i felt sick so when they came up for that nights dinner i asked if they could bring fish and chips - i wouldnt be eating so it was just for them and dad
my dad is a pensioner and not well off ---- they bought the fish and chips and before they left ASKED HIM for the cost of his meal!0 -

I wouldn't say that you are being tightfisted at all!;) you are trying to show your son independency and setting him good values for the future. I am in the same position as you, my 16 year does work part time but trying to get him to save and budget for things he wants is extremely difficult:rolleyes:
Good on you I say!:DDo what you love :happyhear0 -
