I know it sounds hard, even ruthless, but I wouldn't give an more notice than your contract requires.

However solid your plans may be something could change. The university could even burn down for all we know or something dramatic could happen with close family.

If you feel really secure in your employment and want to be as helpful as possible you could possibly tell your boss of your INTENTIONS and that it is therefore LIKELY that you MAY be handing in your notice on a given date. However I would take advice before doing this and get the wording checked.

What are the longer term plans.

Would you still want to keep contact and work for them in the future full or part time while at uni.

Is this just a job or is there some other reason for working for this charity.

Is there a history of inflexability or being reasonble when people decide to leave?

You know the people you work with.

If you may want to use them as a part time employer during your college holidays it may be a good idea to give them extended notice but certainly no longer then 3 months. If not, I would give them the month you are contracted to give them.

Employment loyalty can be a bit of a one way street. When I was made redundant years ago I wasn't given months of notice even though the company must have been planning it for ages.
