Right so I also have £7880 of debt to 17 other creditors that are not 'live' accounts and are with various debt copllection agencies. Ideally id like to start paying these off. Most importantly I need to save money to pay my rent arrears which are £1800 odd and I have a posession order.

Do you not get ANY benefits? Child benefit, CTC? With 4(+2) children I would have thought you'd've got something.

Hi Nuttylou! I take it your income of 1808.94 is your bursary and various benefits you referred to in another thread? It might be useful to provide a breakdown - a bursary is a bit different to a salary and might have an impact on the advice people are able to give you. Good luck!

Car insurance of over £1600 per year seems very high, even for 2 cars.
  • Hi thanks all, I have added in the breakdown of the income.
Car Insurance was checked through confused.com last May when re-newed and was the cheapest possible price at the time due to 3 accidents in 5 yrs, 1 fault, 2 non-fault.
Other half has been driving 3 yrs & myself 4 yrs. My car that I use for placements is only 3rd party, fire & theft as this worked out cheaper and the family car which is a 7 seater is fully comp as it needs to be!
I did look into getting rid of one car but school is a 40 minute walk away which is not feesable with the 4 children, especially if 1 was ill etc and needed collecting as all our family live over 30 miles away.
My placement site would take me an hour to walk to or 30 mins to cycle and as I work 13 hour shifts when I do them it is not safe to do so at 06.30 am and 20.30pm it is along a wooded and high traffic road route.

They have applied for a possession order & have a court date for 15th March. I do have an outsatnding tribuneral appeal with housing benefits for these arrears.

That's OK, I just wondered if you'd got your figures wrong as it sounded high compared to what we pay.

Doesn't your partner work at all?
If not, is the second car really necessary?
It sounds like you do the school run so what is the second car used for?

My partner does not work as he gave up his job to care for our 4 kids, he does all the housework, ironing, cleaning, cooking, school runs, etc etc and I do my course which is 37.5 hours a week plus study times, over time etc etc. The course is 50% theory 50% practical so that means I have to either be at uni 9-4 or work 07.30-20.30.
My partner uses the family car (7 seater) to do school runs, pick up non resident children of weekend, shopping etc etc, and I use mine to travel to and from placement. I walk to uni when I am there as I am able to.
If my partner worked we would have to pay childcare anyway whichwould basically swallow the earnings even with help from NHS for this, and it would also mess my rent up again which I could REALLY do without at the mo!

Makes sense, Nuttylou - just trying to get a 'feel' for how things work for you. ;)

I don't know if your grocery bill of £500 is reasonable for 2 adults plus 4 kids plus 2 extra (there's only 2 of us) but maybe you could take a look at the Old Style MS board, there's some great ideas for menu planning, batch cooking etc.

cancel the midwifery journal and read it free in college library, also have to agree that car ins really high. might be worth re-checking to see what is available.
Pop over to old style forum for great ideas on cheap recipes etc which may help cut your groceries a wee bit,.
    good luck
