Joint loan question

Hi I wonder if anyone knows what to do about this?
I got a loan with an ex about 6 years ago , we were not married and got it in joint names.
A year later we split up and the loan was passed to a debt recovery place and we both paid an amount seperatly.
Every year they woudl write to me and tell me what the balance is...at a guess it is now about 8k, however they have not written to me for over 18months.
So I decided to get my experian report and it was not on it, so I asked the ex to check his and it is not on his.
The debt recovery company will not talk to me as I now have a different name as i got married 4 years ago and I do not know the ex's address.
Should I stop paying it and see what happens?
Is there a possibility it has been written off ?
Help !

you could stop paying and risk more damage to your credit, keep the money to one side then see what happens,or you could write to them enclosing proof of your new name(marriage licence i assume would do?)0
