Italian style coffee makers-safe?

I've always used a cafetiere for quick but not brilliant cup of coffee.
My husband uses an Italian Bialetti pot, which makes a much much better coffee, but you have to hang around watching the stove.
What bothers me is that the bottom pot discolours inside and looks pretty toxic.
I think the pot is made of aliminium. Is this pot safe?..

the discolouration is mostly from the coffee and Europeans have been using these for decades I'm sure they'd have been outlawed by the nanny EU if they were unsafe. They have the advantage that they are very quick in use.

If you're that worried why not buy him a stainless steel one for his birthday. They do make a smashing cup of coffee!

I have a WMF one which I found in a sale - nowhere near the Amazon price  but Alessi make a fun one

  • Good point abaout EU regs. I have assumed that since they are available they must be Ok, but aluminium in now not used for saucepans etc. Also why is it the bottom part looks corroded but the part where the coffee ends up is not discoloured?

I must say the German stainless steel one looks desirable.

I bug***ed up my kitchen worktop by taking one of these off the hob and putting it down on the kitchen top - pot starting hopping around whilst the laminate underneath buckled and bubbled!
