Tuition fees from 2002!

I recently received a letter form my old University which is basically demanding payment of tuition fees amounting to £1,100 from the year 2002!
They are threatening me with debt collectors etc! Bearing in mind this is a "debt" from 2002 that I have never been contacted about and a "debt" for which I believe I'm not liable!!
As far as I was aware, my tuition fees were paid by SAAS (I had also applied for and was successful in receiving a student loan etc). I am in contact with SAAS in an attempt to obtain copies of my SAAS awards but they are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
I haven't replied to the letter from Uni yet, can anyone advise if this debt is "statute barred" as it is more than 6 years old or am I going to have to take out a loan to pay this???
Thanks in advance for any help/advice offered!
