I'd like to try most of them, but this is the shorter list of things that I think my lot would approach without too much suspicion ;-)

    pork and apple burgers

    spicy tomato meatballs and pasta

roast turkey leg and trimmings (very straightforward, just need an idea of whether the portions are adequate!)

Well actually BigMumma - we know that Pup eats human-style food actually and - following on from that article I referred to the other day - that human-style food seems to be a lot healthier for cats/dogs anyway (and that link from Rhonda Jean's blog about animal food was along much the same lines).

I've added those facts together in my mind and am bearing in mind the many household pets across Britain - and wondering if you might like to throw in any comments on feeding Britain's pets cheaply & healthily?:) - a sorta little sub-thread or summat.....
To be honest, Pup usually has what we are having! Today it's a rare treat of a 'cowboys breakfast' insomuch as it's a baked fry-up :rotfl:We're having bacon, egg, chips & beans, with probably scrambled egg & the rest done in 'toven, & Pup will have the bacon, egg & [frozen] veg mixed with couscous & the sauce from the beans dribbled over it all. He won't eat the beans [or broc or cauli]--I've never known an animal to be able to lick the sauce [& gravy] off from the bits he doesn't like & leave the offending item perfectly clean & pristine laughing-smiley-001.gif
The other day I put a chopped carrot, two sticks of celery & a pack of diced fresh lamb's hearts into the slow cooker & added a bit of gravy powder towards the end & he had that with crushed breakfast biscuits. Made two meals for him for probably 80p a portion, & I've just got a pack of puppy kibble to use for training treats that will be cheaper than the ones I have been getting, so fingers x he doesn't mind wink2.gif
The last time we were at the vets when he had grass seeds embedded under the skin on his leg, she said he was an excellent example of his breed :T & I was so relieved! Rather like Weezl's post in the early hours of this morning, I did wonder if I was doing the right thing by bucking a trend :o but then, why change the habits of a lifetime :p

We slow-cooked it with vegetables, spices and tinned tomatoes. Technically, it should have been lovely but it was just too tough to be pleasant. We might have been unlucky in the specific bird it came from, though; maybe they're not all like that.
I've not been very lucky with turkey legs either Avocet, even for Pup. I had visions of getting enough meat off to at least go into a pie with bacon or something, but it wasn't very good at all. I've tried roast & slow cooking & the result is the same confused-smiley-009.giftho they've come from MrT if that makes a difference?

Never tried turkey leg but I get a 800g turkey thigh joint (no bones) from Asda for £3 which I've done in the slow cooker a few times and is really nice. Would probably do for up to 8 portions. Dunno if that helps anyone.
  • Weezl what about Turkey thigh instead of turkey leg. I saw some in Mr S last week that were really cheap and about the size of a small beef joint. There might be better meat yield for the cost from a thigh than the leg (it was boned) so there might possibly be more than one meal to be had from it.
For the cheese and onion tart there is also good recipe in economy gastronomy which uses more onions proportion wise than the rest of the filling so that could save some money as its the dairy that costs most money(although the pastry is a pig so I'd use a rachel allen for the pastry possibly or a carrot based pastry to use up carrots and save cash). You could also possibly cut the cost of the tart by replacing some of the cheddar with gran padano so you get the cheese flavour but can use less cheese.
