  • Hi Weezl! I'm an avid reader of your various threads and would like to volunteer as a recipe/frugality tester ;) I actually have Chickpea Curry and HM Veggie burgers on my menu plan for this week so I can certainly help with those! My recipe I have for the curry comes from a veggie cookbook but I've already been sitting thinking how to make it cheaply so this is the perfect opportunity! I also have a sweetcorn fritter recipe somewhere in a "use up leftover" style cookbook that I shall look out :p

  • Hiya weezl

looking at the shopping list i have 2 questions

how big is the pack of cheese as most supermarkets have had mature cheese on offer for the last 6 months its the 400g packs and its usually £3.99 BOGOf or anywhere from £1.69 -£2 a pack

Also that doesn't seem like a lot of sugar if your preserving (chutney) and cake making etc but it could just be i am used to buyig it in much bigger quantities:rotfl:

The carrot cake recipe , i wondered if my courgette cake recipe would be usable as in replace courgettes with carrots ??

could try tommorow if you like /approve ?

  • Hi Weezl,

Fab thread, I am hooked already!

I'd love to do some testing- the carrot cake looks especially appealing!

Goodluck with all of this. you're such an inspiration.

Hi Weezle, I would be happy to test any of the top 9 on the list and/or the meatballs. Haven't got turkey in or belly pork joint (only sliced if that would do), and I am trying not to shop again untill March!

I have a tin of chickpeas and one of prunes that my sister gave me when she emigrated 3 years ago. (Too mean to throw them away). Have not found a use for them yet! So if any recipe has these let me know.

Thanks for the feedback about the turkey leg, did you oven roast or slo-cooker it?
We slow-cooked it with vegetables, spices and tinned tomatoes. Technically, it should have been lovely but it was just too tough to be pleasant. We might have been unlucky in the specific bird it came from, though; maybe they're not all like that.

Just a thought on the shopping. Would it be cheaper to buy sausages and de-skin them?

    Ill definately join in too

The wy lesley makes the swetcorn fritters is how I do too. You can use any sort of batter really I tend to use some leftover from Yorkie pud mix as theres only the 2 of us and we cant use the whole batter ( plus we freeze batter for another time natch :)

I will definately see, we dont HAVE to live on such a tight budget, but some recipes will be great whatever the reason for frugality ;)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
