Well weezl I've made the cake this morning and it tastes really nice hot, (couldn't wait for it to cool)

I've had to adjust it a bit though.
    • Got all the ingredients ready to mix to find that I had run out of oil - so used softened marg
    • No raisins so used smart price mixed fruit - and I didn't fish out the peel:D
    • I used the lower amount of bicarb - seems to have worked fine, no aftertaste as yet
    • Used half the amounts and baked in a 9" x 9" square tin and cut into 16
I thought the chuncks might have been a bit small but having eaten one I can say that it is rather filling.
It has cooked quite dark and the edges are quite crispy so it might be possible to lower the sugar amount.

Will have a go at the onion tart later today as will be going shopping with DD2 in a short while. I have the ingredients in anyway.

I hope you don't mind but when I do any of the tests I will be adjusting to what I have in, OH is out of work at the mo and buying extra is not really an option. To that end I will pass on the beetroot soup panel - (OH doesn't fancy it either and as he is the soup eater in the household I really should take notice):rotfl:

cost up the onion tart using the asda list I posted earlier

FRUGALISED DELIA THICK ONION TART -- Costings using Weezl's Asda price list

    50g self-raising flour ... 1.4
    50g plain flour ... 1.4
    10g English mustard (mixed) ... 2.0
    100g buttery spread ... 15.0 (special offer - should be 22.8)
    100g mature Cheddar ... 61.6
    700g onions ... 27.3
    2 eggs ... 19.9
    110ml milk ... 6.1
salt and pepper ... 1.0 (nominal pricing)

Total cost ... 134.6p (but would be 142.4p if spread not reduced)

I will be doing this also, until I have to restock ;)

I will be trying the onion tart later today :D
Just a couple of things that I noticed :o

The recipe for the filling asks for milk... but in the method it asks for cream ??? I take it the milk is a frugalista substitution ?

Also, if I may, another frugalista substitution suggestion, could be to use Stork in the pastry part of the recipe, as opposed to a buttery type spread ?
There is 7p difference per 100g between Asda's own version and Stork, thus reducing your costing by 3.5p
I am not sure that using Stork in the filling part would be a good idea, unless you specifically LIKE the taste of Stork.
I dont really like the taste of Stork, but find it undetectibale in baking/pastry, and always use it for such things.
I normally have both in the fridge, as I do alot of baking. But I guess most people would only have the buttery spread in, and use only that :o

I will be testing the carrot cake later in the week. I cant wait to try it with the garam masala. Incidentally... I was in B&M yesterday, and they had the massive Schwartz herbs/spices on sale. And garam masala was 99p !! I couldn't remember how much I had in, so didn't buy any. They didnt have all varieties.

The garam masala worked really well.

Also forgot to say had no oranges so swiped a few oz of OH's precious Tropicana - worked fine.

And I was in our B&M yesterday and the only shwartz they had was seseme seeds - 99p. Soo disapointed.

Yeah.... they had seseme seeds in mine, but a few others too.....
I was a bit disappointed to though, because I have not long bought quite a few herbs/spices in the small jars from Asda, so didnt need any :(
Why do they all run out at the same time ??:rotfl:

weezl, I'm happy to test. In fact,I think I may change tonight's meal plan to include that scrummy-looking onion tart, since we happen to have all the ingredients on hand!

Also, may I be so bold as to offer a recipe for spinach & lentil soup? It's perfect for people, like me, that don't actually like the taste of lentils and is extremely filling (and very MSE!). :)

thick onion tart (like an oniony quiche, delia originally)

    carrot cake

    sweetcorn fritters (not the ketchup)

    chick pea curry

    veg risotto

    home made chutney

    pork and apple burgers

    spicy tomato meatballs and pasta

    pasta, pesto and green beans

    borscht

roast turkey leg and trimmings (very straightforward, just need an idea of whether the portions are adequate!)

roast belly pork and trimmings (as above)

HM pizza with gammon and green beans (on top!)

carrot and chick pea veggie burgers

Hi weezl - I'll join in please :j I'll try any of the above, especially the onion tart, and the belly pork. Can I pass on the borst; I love beetroot, but have never found a borst recipe that I like :o

    Just thinking out loud...

If someone following the cake recipe doesn't have cake tins... they possibly have a grilling pan if they have a grill. Would that work - for the large scale cake baking anyway? If not then investing in a a deep baking tray/roasting pan may have more uses (roast veg, HM wedges, various meats, cookies and traybake style cakes) than a cake tin.

thanks, I look forward to your tart verdict :):D

soup will be great! Won't be able to fit it into the meat eaters budget, but it will definitely be able to feature in the veggie version....

    thank you Penny :) :j:j

the tart, borcht and carrot cakes are already posted (recipe wise) I'm going to tweak the chick pea curry and post that in a min too...

potty, yep, great point on the stork... but I can't fit both in the budget, so they'd either have toast with stork on, bleurgh :( or bake with the butterly stuff.....

What do people think is for the best?
