I think i better speak to my manager again. Cos when i spoke to him on the 1st Feb i told him exactly why i wanted the time off.

Oh well, i guess what will be will be. Shes been waiting for the op for 2 years and she aint gonna cancel so I have to take the time off regardless so if i get a warning, so be it ;)

...I bet your company gets a lot of 'sickies' and they wonder why...
I would never advise people to do a sickie, but some companies truly deserve them!
You would have to be VERY clever and be able to demonstrate, through a doctor's certificate that by coincidence you were sick at the time you requested a/l. If you have evidence they can't touch you!
    (if everything else fails, obviously)

Bad employers deserve bad behaviour..... I strongly believe in fairness on both sides!

I'm probably going to be slaughtered here....

Agreed, abuse like the above also makes things much more difficult for those that are genuinely ill.

I think the real abuse is the OP not being allowed to have time off to look after his daughter when he gave 41 days notice. This is an extreme case, in my opinion, so it requires drastic action.
You won't normally see me advocate this kind of behaviour on this board, but what else is the OP supposed to do? Risk lose his job and not be able to support his daughter?

I think ill just stick to my guns and have the time off. I mean, its only 4 days and i have managed to get care for my wife for the other 9 or so weeks she needs care at home. Its not like Im being unreasonable i dont think, seeings as ive only had 2 days sick in 3 years!

Does it help me that on my absence app i ticked the 'other' box? Under the box there was space to write your reason, and i put - "Wife in hospital, need to care for daughter, Holiday if possible"- because obviously i would prefer to not lose money, would that be substantial enough as a request for parental leave, or would i actually have to write the words parental leave?

On a side note, just to show how unreasonable my employer can be, 1 of the drivers wife and daughter were killed in a car crash, he wasnt at work for a week, and subsequently didnt get paid and got a warning saying he was only entitled to 1 days absence for the funeral. They back-tracked by the way, when the local papers got wind of it :p

Absolutely right IMO. This manager sounds like a monster, with no compassion.

i agree that the Boss is handling this really badly especially if you have the record you have mentioned. If he doesn't allow it you could always raise a grievance about this which would I guess involve higher up people
