Mackenzie Hall Confusion...

Ok people I really need some good advice. I've never posted before so do go easy but I am beginning to feel like I am a bit of a gullible fool.

Long story short... I got a letter from "cowboys" Mackenzie Hall asking to talk to me regarding a personal matter. Going onto their website I accessed the pay by card section and typed in the relevant details and it says I owe £180 to GE Capital Financial services. It asked me to confirm the debt and I just left the page.

I am unsure whether to pay as a few years back I had a few GE Capital cards and they were for store cards which I lost track of. As far as I know they were all settled around 2006. I have heard nothing of this debt and had no notification from GE Capital that I owed them anything until this fell into my lap. I have been at my current address for nearly 3 years and these cards were registered to me at another residence, where I lived about 4 years ago so they must have traced my name somehow.

I am dubious because a few months earlier, I also got a letter from another debt collecting agency (can't remember the name) asking for 100 odd pounds saying they were collecting from BT from a defaulted account back in 2006 at the previous address. I paid this no questions as I was more worried that I had let something slip through the cracks and don't want negative additions to my credit file. Now I'm wondering if they think I'm an easy target.

However, I have joined credit expert and been a member for months and all my Santander (which bought GE if I am correct) cards are labelled settled and there are no defaulted accounts or decrees against me. Could this debt possibly be mine? It would seem that had I defaulted my account back in 2006, it would be on my file??? Would they have not sent me letters and threatened the debt collectors then???

If I pay for an easy life, will it be added to my credit file as I am admitting the debt is mine when it may not be? Or will it be left as they have what they want? But if I ignore the letter, can they add this to my account anyhow?? I don't know anymore... am I likely to be targeted as a gullible person who will pay regardless just for an easy life?

Very confused. Please help.

  • I would send a "prove it" letter if it was me to check if it is your debt - Can you remember how you settled the debt origionally? If it was through cheque etc is there any way to trace it?

I would be tempted to leave well alone until MH come at you with something concrete...ie the Account details.
Until then, this is just fishing. If THEY give you full details ( DONT ask!) then you can deal with it.
    :D:D stay wonky :D:D

I got a letter just the other day from this company, totally out of the blue, relating to some correspondence school?? I do remember a brief encounter with an electrical course many years ago, but I do not believe there was any money owed when i cancelled. It must be eight or nine years ago so i sent the 'prove it' letter. I'll let you know if I get a reply!
I'll have to sort this out!:rotfl:
  • Unfortunately it was by transfer into the Companies bank account and I have since changed banks so there is no way to trace if I did pay.

Also I would find it strange if I had defaulted or they had a decree against me as since this alleged incident in 2006 I have passed credit checks for cars, and a mortgage.

I find the whole debacle just ludicrous. I called the company in question and asked for information and they just cut me off and when I rang back it went to answerphone. Seems like a very unprofessional organisation so think I will ignore the whole thing and watch the space.

Thanks for the all the previous advice!
