Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone has a packet of Colman's Shepherd's Pie Mix in their cupboard and could check the back for the ingredients list to see if it has garlic/garlic powder in it please.
My OH can't have garlic and the Adsa mix had been giving him tummy ache until I realised what I'd done... always read the back to check... ooops!!!! I was just about to do my online shop and tried searching the net but can't seem to find the ingredients.
Any help would be mucho massively appreciated :T

If you have basic storecupboard ingredients such as onions, tomato ketchup/puree, tin of chopped tomatoes, stock cubes then you don't need a mix.
I make veggie shepherds pie, but from my meat-eating days I would make it in the following way:
Dry fry the mince and 1-2 chopped onions (the fat in the mince is all that's needed to fry it) until browned.
Drain off most of the fat in a colander (better to add flavour in other ways and forego the grease)
Put mince and onions back in pan
Add chopped tomatoes (1 tin should do it, maybe 2 for a bigger pie)
Add 1/2 a beef stock cube (optional, don't worry if you have none, or add a teaspoon of bisto)
Season with salt and pepper.
Add a squirt of tomato puree or ketchup, whatever you have.
Add 1 - 2 tablespoons of worcestershire sauce if you have it, or have this on the table if it contains garlic.

For future reference the Ocado site is very useful for finding ingredients in processed foods. Simply do a search (no need to register) and click on 'what's inside'.
But, as the others have said why use a mix? If you need to avoid certain ingredients then real food is the answer.0 -

Oh, you star Thriftlady! :T
I'm planning on making mexican chicken and one of the ingredients is chipotle paste. Waitrose is the only place that stocks it (other than online) and as our nearest Waitrose is over 30 miles away, I decided to make some, but couldn't find the ingredient list for it.
Now I can see exactly what's in it.
Thanks so much!0 -
Thanks for the help everyone
Usually I would make it from scratch and the OH doesn't mind how it's made (apart from hte tummy ache) because he loves shepherds pie... it's our son!!! I've tried to con him and tell him it's a packet mix when I make it from scratch but he won't eat it. Not quite sure how he knows but he just does. I'm thinking of leaving an empty packet on the worktop next time and say "oh yes of course it's a packet mix, you won't eat it otherwise"
I've never tried adding worcestershire sauce befor and that could be whats missing maybe? Thanks for the tipEven if you stumble, you're still moving forward.0 -

I'm a big fan of Waitrose, yeah I know it's more expensive but I'm prepared to pay for a nicer shopping experience and super-helpful, well-informed staff.0
