Late payment on credit card = no loan?

Hi Guys,
I have recently applied for a graduate loan to consolidate my student and current overdrafts, along with a small credit card. The person I spoke to didn't see it being a problem at all as in was in essence no new borrowing.
After a few days of not hearing anything I contacted Natwest and was told that it had been referred as in December of last year I made a late payment (paid on the due date) on my credit card.
Just wondering whether this is normal? And whether this one late payment could mean be being declined?
Thanks
