Making offers to debt collection agencies - advice please

I currently have 6 debts that are being dealt with by debt collection agencies, however when I write to them (by recorded delivery) to make offers of full and final settlement payments, they ignore my letters. I am really disappointed with them as I am really desperate to get rid of these debts once and for all.
Can anyone offer me some advice on how I can proceed - is it worth writing to the companies I owe the money to instead?
