Constant Debt calls, how do they get this data?

Hi,
Been a forum member for a while, i have been getting to grips with my debts and not dealing with it through any debt companies etc.
However ive been inundated with phone calls this week offering DMP' and IVA' how on earth do they get this data?
Do they get this info from the banks or is that illegal for them to pass this information on?
Just absolutely annoying the life out of me. Any discussion or light shining on this topic would be great.
Cheers.

My mom got it to for a bit and she is not in debt even slightly, they basically get your number from somewhere telephone marketing lists, credit card, insurance, you ticked a 3rd party details box, and ring up, because in this recession odds are good to find people in debt, whilst more than 50% save, im sure at least 1 in 10 totally random calls will end up with someone in debt.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -
So is it illegal for banks like alliance & leceister to let data companies know who owes what etc?0

Yes, Data Protection Act 1998, they cannot share personal data without your consent and without a valid reason.
Whoever is ringing you up, has brought a list of phone numbers, and they are just been auto dialled. Try adding your phone number to the TPS service to reduce it - http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
