Well don't forget we owe as a country 500 billion, which is on top of that. There's going to be nobody but us tax payers who will pay that off. The interest on that is paid by our taxes, and I don't see the VAT Controller (Gordon Brown) on these boards looking for money saving ideas.

Then there's various other debts such as PFI which don't show up in the above.

If the Gov spent through Quidco - it would be better... :rotfl:

I have always wondered with such statistics how many of the mortgages are actually Re-mortgages. Surely these would reduce the total lending figure along with redemptions.

    Cheers,

Average consumer borrowing via credit cards, motor and retail finance deals, overdrafts and unsecured personal loans has risen to £4,109 per average UK adult at the end of April 2006.

My personal debt is almost double this; I thought I was a bit more average than I am.

At least it's coming down though.

I can just see Gordon Brown in the treasury - "Quick lets get that new hospital built and go through Quidco - we can get £10m cashback"

Lets ring him up and see if he'll post an SOA

He already has - it's not looking good...

But then again, when someone asks the question "Is there anything you can do to increase your income?", the answer "There are 57 million people out there who can give us money, and we have guns." will take some beating.

Around 15 per cent of 18 to 24- year-olds think an individual savings account (ISA) is an iPod accessory, and one in 10 reckon it's an energy drink. With rising personal debt levels in Britain, and a lack of long-term savings, better money management seems a pressing issue.

Please tell me that is a p!ss take! :rotfl:

    You missed the best bits.
Half the population (52%) could survive financially for just 17 days, should they suffer an unexpected loss of income, according to research by Combined Insurance.

Seventeen days!
The average person has just £27 a week left to live on after meeting all their bills and essential outgoings, a survey has showed.

So for everyone on here who has £100 excess income to use to bang off debt, there is some poor soul out there with £46 more outgoings than income, to balance you.

One in five did not understand the concept of inflation. Well I might as well be bold about this - I don't understand inflation - can anyone explain?

Only 30 per cent could calculate four per cent interest on £2,000 over two years. I am cr*p at maths. Is this right?
    2000 * 1.04 (*2) = £4160

    £2000 / 100 = 20 (1%)
    So 4% is = 80.
    2080 after one year...
    2080 / 100 = 20.8
    4% = 83.2=

    2163.20

    Is that right???

    :)

That was definitely scary reading...and really quite depressing.

I feel a bit bad about this but reading that site made me feel a bit better- there's obviously people a lot worse off than me.
Its scary to think that considering that a considerable amount of people have no consumer debt at all those high averages must mean there's a lot of people oweing unimaginably huge amounts.
Scary indeed. At least I've started paying mine off!
