Management consultants - what do they do?

I've seen an ad for vacancies at a firm of management consultants but it is very vague and doesn't describe the roles they're offering. They just want you to send your cv. I hate to do that as I like to tailor my cv depending on the job I'm applying for as I've done quite a few different, but related things.

I can see from that their website that they do training but that's about the only really concrete thing I can find, otherwise it's bits of project management, vague things like supporting organisations and so on. For all I know it could be anything from the head consultant to the cleaner.

Does anyone work for a management consultancy and tell me what sort of roles are likely to be on offer? I may ring them tomorrow and ask but would rather have some prior information so I don't look a total prat!

Thanks

DS

Management consultants can do many things, but it generally involves looking at a situation for a client and advising them on what they might want to change to improve it, or an analysis of a current situation.

I would agree with this description. However, due to the vague title, I have seen ads for purported 'management consultants' that are nothing short of scams.

OP, can you name the company?
    Gone ... or have I?

I'd probably better not, specially if I want a job there! They're very legit though, a friend works in the same building and they've been there at least 5 years, also they work with organisations I know of, as well as attend conferences etc. They're pretty professional, I just wish they had given an idea of what the vacancies are.

Thanks - I've got a better idea now, I suspect it's some sort of support staff they're looking for as they've advertised in the local free paper rather than professional press or the Guardian or whatever. Why didn't they say.

You show them your watch and they tell you the time :D

Perhaps they are being vague so that they can get a mix of skills that they can sell to clients.

No, they'll keep it, and tell you it was the wrong type for your business.
