New job & CCJ on credit file.

Right guys,

My wife after 7.5 years looking after our son has finally decided to get a job with more hours, now she has been through 3 interviews for a cashiers position with a new company to the UK (large us company) i wont name the company incase anyone gets wind lol

She has now been offered a position to start in 3 weeks time, now a contract of employment has arrived, and there is also a section which is about police checks, and background checks. (police check is no issue as she works at a local school as a dinner lady)

On one of the sections it is asking to list any CCJ's she has, now we had a dispute with a local housing association about a garage we were renting from them (in joint names) the long and short of it is that we lost and ended up with a CCJ on our credit file for £171.00.

The background check states a 2 year check, but there is no time restriction on the question about the CCJ, the CCj was added in mid 2007 so coming on for 3 years now since the date of entry.

My question is: why do they need to know about CCJ's for a blooming cashiers position ?

Can they refuse the position because she has a CCJ which we still to this day believe shouldn't of been put on our file.

what is the best course of action ? explain the details of it and why ? not put it down ?

any advise would be great, as the wife is quite worried that they will once they see a CCJ refuse to employ her..

thanks in advance

Wayne.

  • Personally i would be honest on the application form. State there is a CCJ, state for how much and brief details - ie garage rental dispute, we are receiving legal advice.
Its quite common for cash handling roles to ask about bankruptcy, ccj's etc. If a staff member has cash problems they may be more likely to rob from the firm (stupid i know). In any case be honest and comfirm the details.
If you fail to mention it your wife will start with the company and the checks might take 6 months to come thru, she could then be sacked immediately and any tills being short she could get blame for. (This happened to a colleague at a supermarket i worked at).

I had the same problem today. I applied for a job with a banking call centre. They asked me on the phone interview if i had a CCJ. I told them the truth and how long i had it, what kind of CCJ it was. She told me to hold for a minute, came back on the phone and said thats fine. Still invited me for an interview tommorow.

I just think its better to be honest. Wouldnt want something to haunt you down a few months later.

I have no CCJs only a few defaults. Which will be cleared this week now.

It has stopped me applying direct to banks, but I will soon be able to do so :)

she is going to declare the ccj as suggested, the good thing is the application form has a notes page where you can explain the ccj etc so will just have to put why we got it which was for rent on a garage which we handed the keys back for 8 months prior, but when we battled it in court we were ordered to pay the rent and costs and got a ccj the sad thing is it was me that took out the garage, but the rent agreement was in joint names so i feel quite bad about this problem that really has been caused by me renting the garage effecting her credit and potentially her new job  typical justice system in this country.
