Converting US to UK

Hi
I am reading some recipies and theyrequire for Cups in various quantities (1 cup. 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup 2 cups etc) and I dont have a clue what its UK equivelants are, can anyone help please?
Also one recipe mentions Boiler Onions and says they are quite small, is this what we call our shallots?

Cup measures are really easy to use and to find. Most supermarkets have a set of cup measures with their cookery equipment.
Basically one US cup holds 8 fluid ounces. A US pint is 16 fl oz, so a cup is half a pint.
1 cup = 8 fl oz
½ cup = 4 fl oz
¼ cup=2 fl oz
Some US recipes use the term 'quart'. This is a quarter of a gallon or 2 pints. Remember a US pint is 16 fl oz so a quart is 32 fl oz (which is almost a litre). It is 4 cups.
If your recipe calls for butter to be measured in cups it's easy too. It works the same way.
1 cup of butter is 8 oz etc
However, other things like flour, sugar etc won't convert so easily and you will need to use the cup measure to scoop out what you need.
It is easy to make a cup measure from a large yogurt pot. Simply measure out 8 fl oz of water in a measuring jug, pour it into the pot and mark its level with a marker pen. Cut round the mark and you have your cup measure.
I'm not sure what boiler onions are but my guess would be small pickling onions. A shallot in America is a shallot.
