very interesting article .. and from someone in the industry i can vouch it's a good report ... the only "unfair" bit is that from the Sainsbury prices quoted .. she hasn't been buying many Js own brand or basics.. so not always comparing like for like .
Having said that .. the end result is the important bit .. a mega reduction in spend !!

But as Carol from London points out, she's pictured shopping in a summer dress and scandals, so when was this done?0 -
Will have to try Aldi. I have to say, I think there's little point going to Lidl any more - everything is the same price as Tesco Value and Sainsburys Basics, but if you shop in Tescos/Sainsburys they often have offers on branded stuff which means it's cheaper thank Basics anyway. Plus you can pay by credit card and get points too.0

She spent £160 a week for a family of 5? what does she eat? smoked salmon and caviar washed down with champagne?
No wonder she made a saving at aldi, it wouldn't be hard.
The best bits.
"But with bargains filling our trolleys, the mood in the long queue is good"
"The general mood of all the shoppers was more cheerful than any other supermarket I've visited (probably something to do with all the budget prices), and the fishing and camping section in the middle of the supermarket provided a wonderful piece of light relief, as myself and other shopping all stood laughing and speculating about our fishing skills"0 -
aldi/ lidl do fantastic deals each week on certain themes, you cant beat their lasagne either, unfortunately im not living close to either at the moment but often check out their websites for deals
hope my mother sees this article0 -
I don't understand how she can say she's been spending £160 on food shopping and then in the same sentence say "we've stopped buying drink and there are no treats for the children any more" - surely £160 of shopping must be barely anything *other* than treats
good article though, thanks for sharing itAugust grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -

Years ago - that bit about the anti wrinkle cream winning awards, that was a while back...:wall:0 -
What Lidl is she shopping in? No-one stands around joking and laughing about what they have for their "offer" of the week. Last time I was there, someone shoved me out of the way for the last cat scratching post.
the only banter you get at the tills is people complaining they only have one checkout open.
I'm never out of Lidl though0 -
I've always found Lidl cheaper than Aldi, but it's unsuprising she didn't when she was buying own brands in Aldi and branded products in Lidl.
The queues in Aldi are always far worse, too.0 -
I like Lidl and it's a regular shopping stop for me. You can't beat some of their stuff in the quality-for-money stakes. But it's silly to think you can always get all your shopping for the best price at the same store every week, surely? You have to shop around and keep your eye open for best prices and bargains.Val.0

We started doing some shopping at Lidl this year as my husband's mum has been going for a while to hers....
We still shop at Asda but on one shop alone we saved £6.58 compared to Asda....
That was a good enough reason for me to keep shopping there...0
