Please translate some knitting instructions

I'm just trying to teach myself to knit and i'm quite impressed with all the scarves and the hat i have already made. However, now I'm starting a cardigan for my DD but i've already hit a stumbling block and can't find the info on the websites i've been using. Hope someone can help:

Using 3.25mm needles and cast on 29 sts and knit 4 rows (I've done this bit)

Change to 4mm needles and working in st-st (I know this means knit one row and purl the next)(throughout) work 41 rows inc 1 st at beg of 5th and every foll 9th row (this is the bit I don't understand)
34 sts. (and this bit)
Cont without shaping until Left Front measures 17 cm, ending with a ws row **

REally want to achieve this without having to ask my mother-in-law for advice so would appreciate some help.

You work 41 rows of st=st, OK :D Within these 41 rows, you increase a stitch at the beginning of the 5th row, 14 th row, 23rd row, 32nd row and 41st row (that's every 9th row ;) ).

    That's 5 increase rows, so you'll have gone from 29 to 34 stitches :T

There are several ways of increasing - one of the easiest is to K1, then pick up the loop between that and the next stitch, and knit inot that.

    Good luck :T

Ok, so you're knitting 41 rows in st-st, and increasing one stitch at the beginning of the 5th, 14th, 23rd, 32nd, and 41st row

34 sts. (and this bit) This is just to tell you how many stitches you should have: you started with 29 and have just increased by 5 = 34 stitches :)

Good luck, shout if you need any more help!
  • Thanks very much - that makes so much more sense - although not sure how to add that extra one - off to find a video that will explain it to me!

I find it easiest to simply knit into a loop as normal, and then again into that loop, thus making two stitches.

Try knittinghelp dot com, and look under free videos. It has videos for lots of different kind of increases, and shows matching ones for the left and right sides. Myself, I like KLL and KLR if the pattern doesn't specify a particular increase.

There's also decreases, which you might need when you get to the armholes.

Edit: Hope you can find the knittinghelp site. I'm a new user and I'm not allowed to paste links yet :(, and if I type the web address it turns it into a link automatically!

  • I knit into the front of the stitch then without slipping it off I knit into the back of the stitch. It looks pretty neat too.
