HELP! Can they do this?

Long story cut short : years ago i was overpaid tax credits, and although i told them at the time, like all things it cam around and bit me in the bum. I have been repaying £150 pm for ages, but it was due to finish next month.

I've just looked at my bank statement, and found that they have taken this month and next month's payments together - £286.65. I can't afford this - I had budgeted the £150, and was still cutting it fine this month. Now I will go overdrawn AGAIN. more charges.

Are they allowed to do this? Is there anything I can do - it is a direct debit, so aren't they obliged to tell me before changing the payment amount? What can I do bank-wise while (and if) this is getting sorted out

Sarah xx

If it is a direct debit and it guenuinely is doubled up with no notice then yes it has to be refunded. I would dig out your repayment paperwork and contact the bank, it is upto them to repay it first.

    Never mind.

i just phoned hmrc. Apparently I made an agreement this time last year that I would pay 286 this month. my head was a mess then, so i probably did what would get it sorted so as they didn't start going on at me. doesn't help me find the rest of the money i need this month though.
