Best running trainers needed

Finally got around to weighing myself and nearly passed out on the scales (ok, over hyping the male ego I know), so I am taking up running again to shift the winter belly layer, hence I need a decent pair of running trainers at a credit crunch price. Anyone out there who can help reduce my belly:rotfl:

If your serious about running, get yourself fitted, what works for one person doesn't always work for another. For example I like Asics for running trainers as they feel more supportive, I have an over pronation. You may not have an over pronation (70% of people do have one) so its best to go to a specialised store so they can check your running style.

Runners need is one good store, if you have one near you, asiscs also offer the service but they do only offer one brand so I'd suggest a Runners Need above an asics store. There are other stores that will also offer this service, its called "Gait Analysis".

If your just looking for general trainers to play sport in I'd suggest a more basic overal brand like Nike but as you've mentioned running I'd say go to a specialised store.

I am a qualified personal trainer: you absolutely MUST get fitted for running shoes. That means you get on a treadmill in your bare feet and then again in some trainers: usually the lower part of your legs will be video recorded. Running - especially outdoors on concrete and especially if you are overweight - puts a huge strain on the joints so you need shoes suited to your gait for the best protection. The top brands are Asics, Saucony and Mizuno with a few others not far behind - Nike are very overpriced as you pay for the name, you will get more for your money with a specialist brand.

I wouldn't go to a shop that is tied to Asics or indeed any other single brand as they don't suit everyone's foot shape or gait. You don't need to spend a fortune on running shoes, £30 to £50 unless you are running marathons, but do get two pairs and rotate them as they need time to dry out and for the cushioning to recover between sessions. If you are in Yorkshire, SportsShoes.com in Bradford are absolutely excellent and very keenly priced.
