Contacting the credit reference agencies

Hi,
I'm trying to remove someone from my credit report as a financial associate as we have had no association since mid-2008.
I already have an account with Experian and have filled in their form, but when I've looked at Equifax and Call Credit, they want me to provide a report number. Can I simply call/write to them explaining my name and address, the ex's details, addresses shared and ask them to remove me from their file, even though I don't have any reference number, or do I need to get this reference number first?

I guess the report number is their report they hold on you.
