Plum, please don't be put off. Me and my OH can not afford to buy a house in the area we live, but due to him being a retained fire fighter we need to stay in the town and close to the station, we have been lucky enough to come across a 2 bed flat that is 3 years old, on a 50:50 part buy part rent option through Bromford.
We went and viewed the flat, had a meeting with an independant financial advisor the very next day. We have just completed our application pack, and been approved and accepted and I'm due my telephone interview today.
Turns out I actually know the current owners of the flat and they love the place, they are only moving due to have two young children and needing the space, but have been lucky enough to move home with parents for the time being.
I also know others that are in a 40:60 Buy/Rent with Soverign and again, they've been in their flat for 4years.
If it's what you want and what you can afford, don't let people get you down other it. Phone the association and speak to them, go through your worries, afterall that's what they are there for.

When I posted something on this board before about part buy part rent, I read what people wrote and it's hard to read when people are telling you don't do it. But these schemes are there to help the likes of people like us that can not afford to get on the first run of the ladder alone. Chin up, if you like the property and you can happily afford it, go for it!!
