Wedding Cake

I'm getting maried in May and need to start thinking about a Wedding Cake. I'm not that fussed about a cake but want it to look half decent.

I've been looking at the M & S Cakes but are the worth the hassle. Would You just by the stand and that off ebay? Any guidance would be brill!

    Hi Lisa
You can hire cake stands - just have a look in your yellow pages for cake shops. They usually charge you quite a high deposit - just in case you don't return it..!!

As for the actual cake - that really depends on what you want.

M&S and Asda do plain fruit cakes in a variety of sizes - and you can buy the sugarcraft to decorate it if you don't like the plain variety..!

They work out quite cheaply, all things considered - and people are only going to eat it, aren't they!!!?
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

I bought my stand new from Ebay as nothing was mentioned by my wedding co-ordinator about having one in their supplies - it cost me around the £40 mark. My cake was an M&S one, three tiers which i decorated with crystal garlands and a crown for a further £40.

When i looked up on the internet approx prices for the cake it was coming up over £300 for one similar which was all sponge - i had two fruit layers and a sponge.

If you want something unique/individual theres nothing better than getting the ready made cakes and decorating them at least you know they will fit your budget.

Hi there, me and my OH are having a cupcake stand with a smaller cake on the side to cut.. We were orignally going to get someone to make the cupcakes for us, but then one day my OH came home from work with the Hummingbird Bakery Cook Book which contained many a lovely sounding cupcake recipie...so we decided that as our wedding isn't until august we would spend the time from now until then making cupcakes and perfecting our technique..

Now our cupcakes look gorgeous and you couldn't tell the diference between ours and professionlly made ones.. it works out much cheaper to buy ingredients in bulk and make them ourselves, plus is makes me feel good knowing that i've done something myself!

    xx

My mum is making mine, the fruit is soaking in brandy as we speak. Were having a 4 tiered cake, that will be stacked on top pf each other, no space inbetween each tier.

I am icing & decorating it myself.

My mum makes the fabbest fruit cakes, she's just never taken it to the next level and learnt to decorate yet.

You dont have to buy a stand you can use short glass vases as supports betwen each layer and you can fill them with anything, but i dont know what an M&S cake looks like or it it comes on a board etc.

Forgot to say: if your not that fussed why not just get one of those giant cakes from asda, they come in all flavours and are about £10 each.

  • Hi, I'm making my own too. I'm getting married in July and have already found and tested the fruit cake & carrot cake and have to decide on my sponge cake yet. All my family and friends are very willing testers to my cakes. I just need now to perfect my icing.
I just cannot justify spending £100s on cake.

Where can I get a cup cake stand?

How difficult is it to make cup cakes?

cup cakes are easy to make but they dont keep long, they will need to be made days before the wedding to keep them fresh, icing them is again up to you and your skills level.

we've found the cupcakes very easy to make, just have a few practice runs and you'll be fine! I bought a frosting 'gun' from Hobbeycraft to ice the cupcakes with as it gives a very professional result. you can get all sorts of things to make your homemade cupcakes look very pretty by getting cupcake wrappers which basically cover up the bun cases you cooked them in (you can get them in any colour to match your colour scheme).

Its quite fun to make them, and it also means you have lot of cupcakes to eat after you practice runs!

I think we need pics Becky :)

I've been considering cupcakes- if nothing else it will make handing them out to folks easier and they're more likely to get eaten :) Also got scope for having a few different flavours.. Don't want the hassel of making them myself though. :rotfl:
