Do you have to change the name when married?

When a woman gets married does she have to change the name on the mortage to her married name? A friend has been married nearly 14 years but still has the joint mortgage in her maiden name (everything else is in her married name). Would this ever been a problem?
Just wondering.
Just wondering.

You don't have to. But why wouldn't you?
It might cause a problem if you wanted to apply for another product with the lender at some point in the future. But that would depend on the product and the lender in question!0 -
The easiest answer is to just keep your maiden name after marriage. If I was a woman there is absolutely no way I would ever change my name on marriage.0

I got married 3 years ago and have never taken my husband's name. I chose to keep my maiden name largely because I didn't see the point and I can't be faffed with changing everything. (Oh, and I quite like my surname!)
I've never had any issues where joint accounts, mortgages are concerned...but then I have never used my married name on anything, so there has been no change for me. I don't see why it would be an issue though re. the mortgage.
(Although don't think my husband's Mum has ever really gotten over it!! She now views me as a staunch feminist who has insulted the family name!! Ha ha ha!)
It is however quite surprising how many people do pass comment - I was once questioned about it by a rather put-out and indignant Doctor's Receptionist!0 -

HiThis wouldn't be a problem. We sell lots of houses where a maiden name has been kept on the title and/or mortgage account.
