Which basic bank account?

Afternoon everyone,

My OH needs to open a basic bank account on the advice of the CCCS. She was going to go with Natwest, but I have just realised that Natwest is owned by the RBS. One of her loans is with Sainsburys Bank....now, are the banking facilities provided by the RBs AS I can't quite remember? So would thi smake Natwest ptentially unsuitable?

Cheers,
D.

I've got a basic bank account with Nationwide, opened a year ago when I made a decision to become debt free. I have no debit card or cheque book, just a cash card. However, if I need a cheque, they will issue one for me. It runs the same way as other bank accounts by and large - does all the direct debit stuff and has internet banking, but no overdraft facilities.
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

    HI MinnieSpender,

Thanks for the info. After doing some more digging on the internet I have found out that Sainsburys Bank is a joint venture with RBS.

What I was trying to find out is that is she opened a Natwest basic bank account could Sainsburys get their hands on the money that goes into that account i.e. offsetting it, because they are linked thought the RBS?

Anyway, I will definitley get her to look at the Nationwide account too.

    Cheers,
    D.

I have a cash minder account with the Co-Op and you can do it over the phone. 08457 212 212. It gives you a cash card and absolutely no credit. The charges aren't too bad either if you do slip up. I just had a dd bounce due to my child benefit not going in to the account and it cost me £19.50 which is loads less than my old bank.

I have a basic bank account with Abbey and they gave me an electron card (debit card) and cheque book. However, they are absolutely useless as a bank and have charged me heaps over the last couple of years.

If you are with Payplan you can log onto https://www.justabank.co.uk and they have a PDF of all the basic bank accounts available, you can also search them on https://www.moneysupermarket.com.

Like Jellycat40 I am opening a Co-op cashminder account because they seem very fair and are also an ethically run bank, which I kinda like.

    Good luck!

Not your fault, so ask them nicely for the charge to be refunded.
