this thread has really made me think. the biggest expense in our house is food/cleaning stuff/cat food ,so from now on i am going to spend less! i will buy cat food in the bigger bag not the little boxes [i have 2 cats]. i already make HM soup and stews but will be looking to make all expensive stuff go twice as far,so its more bulking out with lentils, pearl barley etc. i have made a stick of butter go farther by melting it then adding water and stirring until nearly set, refigerate and you have loads more spread :-) potatp cakes, yorky pudding with variuos toppings eg mince and veg, curried lentils, veggie mix in gravy. a chicken will now make soup, sandwiches, curry, and a roast dinner. i will look for woopsies ,i will not buy cheese [=very expensive lump of fat-----imo] no more wine, will drink water and less tea and coffee, will roast meat and slice thin for sandwiches and will make more HM bread ,cake and scones. phew.

    the base is
    • 400g (14oz) potatoes, peeled
    • 175g (6oz) self-raising flour
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 2 tsp mixed dried herbs
    • 150 ml (¼pt) milk
Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl, add the potato and herbs and stir to combine. Add the milk and mix to form a soft dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly to form into a smooth ball Place on a greased baking sheet. Press out evenly to a 23cm/9” round. Put into the oven 225c/425f/Gas 7 to bake for 10 minutes. Remove the pizza base and lower the temperature of the oven to 200c/400f/Gas 6.add tomato puree and whatever toppings you want top with cheese and cook for a further 8-10 minutes until the cheese has melted and the edge of the base is crisp. serves four ( ish) if you have a fan oven cook at slightly lower temps

this sounds great, but forgive me for asking a silly question..........are the potatoes cooked and mashed?if not what shape are they cut into to add to mixture,im just picturing a smooth dough with lumps of cubed potato in/sticking out of side....or is that the idea lol

Cut the potatoes into even size pieces and boil for 15 minutes in lightly salted water until tender. Drain well and allow to cool, then mash.

  • I was spending roughly £80 a week for an online shop for me, OH, DS (6), and a cat.
However I now do a £100 shop online fortnightly and it lasts us with about £10 spent at greengrocers to top up on fruit and veg the second week.

There is only me, DS (7), and a dog and I was spending in excess of £80 per week. That was also being healthy, but OS and as moneysaving as possible.

Now I am doing a meal plan and buying online - my grocery bill was £50 this week, but that included toilet rolls, kitchen towels and wet wipes which I only buy every 4 weeks or so.

    Meal plan this week is,

    Sunday
    Roast chicken dinner,
    Apple crumble

    Monday
Chicken & Veg Curry with Rice and Naan Breads (extra for the freezer)

    Tuesday
Risotto (using stock from carcass) and whatever veg needs using up.

    Wednesday
Vegetarian chilli with Wraps (extra for freezer)

    Thursday
Leftover curry or chilli for me.

    Friday
Toad in the hole and veg

Breakfast is usually cereals with added fruit, fruit juice, or yogurt and fruit for me.

Little one takes a packed lunch everyday with normally has whatever has been on special offer that week. He will aslo have fruit and a homemade jelly or cupcake (jellies this week with mandarins in)

For my lunches, I will have cereal, leftovers, or make a load of pasta with Tuna and sweetcorn and split it up over 3 days and that does my lunches for the week too. This week I have a load of carrots to use up so Im making carrot and coriander soup for my lunches this week.....

    Hope this helps xx
