Hi,
I'm new to this and just had my light bulb moment in January when my finances started to affect my mood and relationship with my girlfriend and general well being. Any help would be much appreciated:
Outstanding debt
Halifax Loan 1 - £14,340.70 left @ 13.2% = £226 p/m
Halifax Loan 2 - £9,151.32 left @ 14.9% = £404.57 p/m
Tried to combine the two loans but rejected by Halifax despite excellent credit score of 996
Credit Card - £2,950 (now closed) @ 16.9% = £100 p/m

hi right i have made a few comments, i have had a couple of assumptions such as live on own and do not have kids (however i am interested in the kids clothes if this is right) anyway sorry if i have made these wrong however i am not overly keen on the SOA format that has been used (usualy most people use the makesense of cards one) but i hope these help to start of with

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
great reply. I cant really add anything except to say could you try looking into the possibility of selling the car and trading down to a cheaper model? thus freeing up a lump sum to pay off some of the debt.

Thanks a lot for your comments they are much appreciated. In response to some of the questions:
Drinking & Eating out I absolutely agree that I need to cut down and to be fair I have in Dec/Jan but thought I'd put what the norm was.
Haircuts - up until recently have been going to Toni & Guy (ridiculous I know) so £20 was a drop. Going to college is a great idea!
Cinema/DVD's - Again i've cut down on these already and will ensure it's not a monthly occurrence.
I have a 4 year old girl that I don't live with and basically her mother and I have come to an agreement where I don't give her maintenance and buy her clothes etc. because i've taken on 'our' debt.
You have all given me some good pointers and I really appreciate it.
Does anyone have a view on how much a single person should spend on food/groceries a month? I do tend to batch cook things like soups, chilli, pasta sauces etc.0 -
for the food/groceries side of things there are a lot of people who can do a months shopping for around £60 for one person or £300 for a family of 4 which makes your £150 for eating in and £50 for eating out a month somewhat excessive
however i would not suggest you try and cut down that drastically stright away, as a lot of people find it too much of a culture shock to keep it up, that is why the drop a brand challenge is good, since you buy your normal foods but just drop a brand from market leader - supermarket own - supermarket value and actually see if you can notice a difference (other than in your wallet) of course there are things i would never go to the value brand for such as toilet paper _pale_ however you will be able to work out your own
as for the other things just think about cinema or renting a DVD sometimes (especially with a girlfriend) it can be much nicer (more romantic) to have a meal at home and watch a movie than going to the cinema where you have to be quiet, and if you buy the DVD for <£5 (ok you will never get the newest releases) you get to keep it and can watch it again or sell it (amazon marketplace/ebay)Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
There is me, hubby and 2 children and we spend £150 a month on food.
I stick to a strict list of what we NEED!
I meal plan
I have soup before main meal and do smaller portions now
I grab offers, especially bogof.
I drop brands and have noticed NO differences (apart from baked beans and tom sauce
) kids notice when they see bottles but i put drop brand into brand LOL!
We eat at my parents once a week.
I make my own bread/biscuits/cakes
Grow my own veg and hoping to expand this.
Iceland do some great bargains 3L coca cola £1.56
3L lemonade schweppes £1
Cleaning products i go to poundland - they sell brands for £1 AND books/dvds,toys, household bits loo rolls etc.
Kiddies clothing - ebay, asda, tesco, M&co, primark, ethel austin all resonable., She won`t need clothes every month.DebtFree FEB 2010!Slight blip in 2013 - Debtfree Aug 2014 :j

Eating Out: I'm terrible for this, but we now restrict ourselves to one meal out per month and perhaps one takeaway - total roughly £20 per month out of my personal budget (we share the cost equally).
Drinking Out: Same as above.
We average £180-£200 per month on groceries for 2 people and a cat - this includes food, cleaning products, cat food and wine! You should be able to cut your budget down using the tips above.
Presents: We are also guilty of spending alot in this department (lots of little cousins to buy for) but we now collect nectar points, boots points etc.. to buy stocking fillers and this really helped last christmas to bring the total bill down. Make sure you shop around for presents and get the best deal. Make a list of everyone you buy for and how much you spend and see if you can cut it down a bit. If you buy for lots of people, even reducing the amount by £5 makes a big difference to the budget and no alot of difference to the quality of present.Mortgage Free x 1 03.11.2012 - House rented out Feb 2016
