Best place to advertise my car?

I'm trying to sell my car (live in Glasgow) can anyone recommend where i should be advertising it?

I've tried autotrader before but just kept getting contacted by scammers or folk living down south. Can't be bothered with the hassle and can't really afford to list it again.

Have had a sign in the window for weeks but no luck!

If it's a decent make and model then on one of the Internet forums for that car.

If you already have a sign in the window then park it outside a branch of Halfords or Kwik Fit or anywhere where people with cars will be.

Strathycruise ( http://www.strathycruise.com/phpBB/index.php?sid=44e9dae6cfbda7e34c9c9989cd974539 ) has lots of car enthusiasts and a good used car section.

This is probably the worst month to sell as many people have just got their first salary since Xmas and also the post Xmas credit card and winter fuel bills.

Last time we sold a car privately (it was over 5 years now!) we did it in the Evening Times. Did get a few scammers phoning telling us to advertise with them as they have buyers waiting (yeah right), but in general we got 3 enquires and it sold easily enough. Not sure it is popular anymore with the rise of the net and autotrader.

    Supermarket can occassionally be alright.

Tried to sell last 2 vehicles I had thru ebay and all I got were derisory bids and relist fees - tried them on Gumtree [Gumtree.com] and sold after a few day [for more than the reserves were on ebay].

Had to pay £10 for a feature listing on Gumtree last time as it keeps you at the top of the page.
I see a lot of cross-posting of the same ad's on other city sites so maybe worth considering if you are between 2 larger towns/cities.

Register for a free photobucket account and take loads and loads of pictures [Gumtree will allow you to upload 3 - I think] ... put a link in the ad to the photobucket album and you can see how many 'lookers' you attract - phtobucket has a counter

Take a video of the vehicle in 'walk-round' style and upload to youtube [add link to gumtree] - pop the bonnet and start the car [show exhaust from tailpipe - rev the engine to listen to engine running - show all lights working - horn - doors open and closing -electric windows/seats/all switches/gadgets etc - also underneath for any drips or not etc - also show any defects ... rust, dings/dents, scratches ..... it all gives any buyer more info and less room to haggle if they want the vehicle.

    hope it helps.
Learn to laugh at yourself ... everyone else has:rotfl:

I bought a jeep on Gumtree recently but BEWARE there are quite a few scams on there, i.e. vehicles being advertised at a very low price.

  • i would try gumtree too but as Nosht said, beware of scammers on there!
  • Thanks everyone for the advice.Gumtree could be worth a shot.

One of my work colleagues was also telling me about a car site called s1cars.com? Has anyone used this site? Apparently, it's Scotland only and I can list my car for free on there, so might give that a go too and will report back if it's any good!.

S1cars sounds like it's the same as s1jobs and such, believe it's owned by Scottish Media Group (ok STV is crap).
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

Last time we sold cars, we put ads in those coloured free papers (think one was called Scot-Ads, can't remember the other one), one's yellow and one's blue. We had to advertise for a couple of weeks, but the ads are free so it didn't cost us a penny and both cars sold within about a month. Paper itself cost about 60p IIRC (so it did cost us 60p - to renew the ad you just phone them and ask them to repeat it)
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.
  • Hey, everyone thanks for all your help. I've actually managed to sell my car now, sooo happy! :D

After asking if anyone had used s1cars.com, I gave it a shot (figured nothing bad could happen!) and actually sold my car yesterday! It didn't cost me anything so the money will come in handy to help me save for a new one.

Can't recommend it highly enough, had 4 genuinely interested people contact me within a couple of days. If anyone else wants to give it a shot, just go to s1cars.com/sell-a-car/
