    It sounds to me like it may have been someone with a bit of authority to have asked for ID.

    Not at all. Anyone can ask anyone else to provide ID. It's just a question, isn't it? Just a bunch of words. You're not breaking the law by asking the next person you speak to to provide ID and they won't be breaking the law when they suggest you mind your own business.

    Now demanding ID, essentially forcing someone to provide it... not the same thing.

    It's really only people like the police, customs, etc who can demand ID and even then only certain circumstances. And I believe they're supposed to identify themselves to you as part of any such demand on their part, e.g. produce a warrant card if out of uniform.
    If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
