See a broker, or wait?

I am currently employed on a temporary contract, which is due to finish in April10. I have just called Barclays (who I bank with), to ask whether they would consider lending to someone on a temporary contract, and was told that I would need to provide a 3 year track record of constant employment in my current field. I don't have that, but only due to visa restrictions, where I couldn't legally work. I have worked steadily since Nov07, and from Feb06-Feb07.
Should I speak to a broker to see if there are any lenders who are flexible or are these kind of criteria generally set in stone?
