Apprentice electrician wannabe?

Hi everybody,
Does anybody have any advice on finding someone to apprentice to?
My husband has just completed his C&G to become an electrician and he has Part P and 17th Edition etc but just can't get a break finding a role.
He's 32 and working in data entry to pay the bills but he completed his theory training with the best grades in the class so it's completely demoralising to not be able to find a route into the industry.
He did a NewCareerSkills course through home studying and several weeks of practical training so theoretically he's ready to be an Electrician's Mate but, without practical experience built up working on site day-in/day-out, he's been told that his paper qualifications don't actually make him fit for the job.
He's written to every electrician and electrical firm within 40 miles asking if they need an apprentice and he's put out feelers to try and become a labourer so he can at least get some experience on building sites but so far nothing.
I don't know if potential employers feel he's too old/expensive maybe but any advice is totally appreciated. He just needs a first step on the ladder.
Thank you!

He might be better, putting himself forward as a sparks mate rather than an apprentice, at 32 they may not take him seriously,
For some real experience I would suggest some of the larger national Mechinical and Electrical companies, I don't know where you live but there's a lot of work going around the Olympic sites, When I first came out of my time I worked away on the larger sites in London and Oxford, this is where I learnt more from the trade,
Has he thought about getting into the maintenance trade, in some of the larger production factories.
Sorry I can't be of more help but with limited experience that is where I would be heading,
Good Luck0 -
Try the NHS, they have Estates Dept who cover all trades.
Alot of hospitals now employ semi skilled men to cover a variety of trades without C&G qualifications. This would be an ideal entry route for your husband to build on his theory skills and earn a moderate income (pay scale band 3 up to £18,157)
Electrician's pay is band 4 which pays around £24,000 including RRP.
Call outs would increase pay,0 -
