Can I switch to variable rate?

I am paying a fixed rate mortgage to Halifax with the rate fixed until Feb 2011. However, the early repayment fee falls to 0 in Feb 2010.

I could, therefore remortgage, but I earn much less than when the mortgage was taken out and no one would give me a new mortgage at present.

Would it be possible to ask Halifax to put me on their standard variable rate or risk losing me to another lender (not that anyone else would lend me the money!)?

I hope I have included all the necessary details and would appreciate any help on this. If I could make this switch I would save £300/ month, an absolute fortune to me at the moment. Is this a feasible plan?
Many thanks.
