Keeping my HM bread crusty?

As there are gazillions of threads about home made bread please feel free to add it to the most appropriate - I wasn't sure which one to resurrect :o

I've kidnapped my Mum's unsed Panasonic breadmaker and tried it on Saturday night ... ohh the highlight :D (It's been in her cupboard for YEARS and I have no intentions of giving it back :p )

Result was lovely and have eaten loads of it but still have half a loaf left - how do I keep the bread soft but the crust crusty? At the moment I have it in a ziplock bag and the crust has gone soft :(

Thanks!

Hiya, I have a bread maker and find because there is no preserves in it the bread does not keep very well. The last one I made, I used the second half in a bread and butter pudding.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

When I make bread I slice it if its a loaf and then put most of it in the freezer. You can either defrost it or toast it straight from the freezer.

I got a copy of the Breadmachine Bible on Saturday & I'm sure it said to store in polythene bags for a soft crust and paper or cloth (clean pillow case? ) bags for a crusty crust.

I can double check when I get home from work if you like? :)

  • Yes you need to keep it in a paper bag.

    Sorry I forgot about this:o
Bread is best stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated bread bin or earthenware bread crock, and not in the refrigerator. Wrap the bread in foil or a polythene food bag if it has a soft crust, and in a paper or fabric bag if it is crusty.
