What to do?

I'm a SAHM of 2 - my husband works full time and we have 1 DD at school, and DS at nursery/pre school who goes to school next September (2011).

I do some typing on a self-employed basis which brings in a bit of money but really not very much. DH and I had a serious chat yesterday and I need to be bringing more money in; we have just enough for all the essentials but if anything goes wrong or needs replacing or, heaven forbid, we want a foreign holiday we won't be able to get any more money!

I used to work as a secretary for a large company but REALLY couldn't face going back to an office job. I did wonder about applying to work in a supermarket or even doing cleaning or do people's ironing from home - all extra money helps. The problem with supermarket type jobs is I could only do a few hours a day and with the travelling time it'd hardly be worth it. I'm not sure what they pay. I've been caught before by a scam on data entry and won't go anywhere near that now.

I think my favourite idea at the moment is taking in people's ironing to do at home and DH suggests I do a business plan but I wondered what other people think. Thanks in advance :).

  • Hi there,
I have 2 children too. One at school and one starting sept 2011. I am just starting to think about what I can do to earn some money once youngest starts school too :-).
When my eldest was 6 months old I started a small ironing business. Just used my current ironing board and iron, did some flyers and used vista print to make some free business cards. I popped them through doors and left the flyers in local coffee shops/shop windows. I got a couple of customers who brought items to me about once a week....mostly work shirts. I gave people invoices and receipts and kept records, completeing a tax return. It worked fine and I would do the ironing of an evening while watching tv, while husband put son to bed :-)
I didn't make lots of money but it helped and I would have got more work if I had persevered but I became pregnant again and stopped. I'm thinking about doing it again now though as the boys are getting older. I think its a good way of working hours that suit. On this thread there is a whole section on running an ironing service. Have a search around as you might find it useful. Go for it I say :-)
    Hope that helps.

  • What about party plan - fab job for SAHM's as you can work around your family life.

There are lots of different threads on here for the different party plan companies, so there is something for everyone.

Look through and find what you think you would be interested in.

I started party plan 3 years ago, and have had a blast since. I love my job, the company I work for are fab and look after their workers and I have met some fantastic new friends as well as earning money for talking :T for me it just doesn't get any better.
    I get paid to party!:rotfl:

I'm not really into party plan - I did to Truly Madly Baby or whatever it was called for a while and I'm not the sort of person who finds it easy to go into someone's home, do 'icebreakers' and sell stuff I'm afraid. It suits some people but just not me!
