That is a great article proving the savings. I love it (OK maybe not as much as Sainsburys but I can afford to shop at Aldi!!!!!)

I've decided there must be a cashback scheme for everytime someone says they love Aldi or Lidl. Where is it? I want in.

There are some good things in Lidl - their mozarella & tomato pizzas (2 in box, in freezer section) look and taste like the expensive Dr Oetker variety, their 1kg lasagne is also good. Aldi has some good things in too - like posh Italian ham at 99p a pack (its covered in herbs and is fab). I think that over on the oldstyle forum there is a thread about the good things in Lidl.

We Brits tend to think of Lidl as a cheap shop and not good quality whereas in Germany and the rest of Europe its a really good store...its snobbery really.

I have been trying to convert my work colleagues to Aldi and even showed them the article in the Daily Mail but they were having none of it - you can lead a horse to water and all that. If I can save £3600 p.a. then I will!!!!

I have even tried their lipstick this week - £1.99 instead of my usual £14 Clinique lipstick and its staying power is far superior than Clinique.

I wish there was a cash back site for recommending Aldi as well!

would love you guys to look over the below:
    Satellite/Cable TV...................... 28
if you can get out of the contract then just cancel - the free channels are pretty good! = £336 p.a.

    Groceries etc. ......................... 440
blimey! very high! 2 of us plus family visitors etc, comes to £200 pm max and we eat really well. cut this by half = £2,640 p.a.
    Clothing................................ 100
No-one *needs* £100 worth of new clothes every month, not even growing children. Could be cut by at least 80%. Always allow something, for stuff like underwear, child's shoes. Wear what you already have for the time being. If you cut this to say £15 p.m. then that = £1,020 p.a.!
    Medical (prescriptions, dentist etc).... 60
If you buy more than one NHS prescription per week it's worth getting a pre-payment certificate which is roughly £110 per year and give unlimited prescriptions. Are you paying into private plans or HSA or similar? Do you use them that much? Do you get full value?
    Presents (birthday, christmas etc)...... 30
    Cut this by 30%
    Haircuts................................ 0
But allow even £5 /month here unless you all cut each others' hair :)
    Entertainment........................... 0
But allow even £5 /month here a BOGOF movie on orange wednesday for example.

You guys could pay off £3000+ per year easy, without much hardship, if you keep track, make a united front and stand together to kick debt's a.r.s.e :-D

Hope you don't think I'm being harsh - my advice is well-meant and I'm sure you'll take it in the spirit intended!
  • Just to add: you might find this post useful (even so-called "posh" people do their shopping in discount shops!) http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=15723209
  • Hi,
Dont know which supplier you use? I,m with npower and they claim they cant advertise there go fix tariff. It may be worth contacting your supplier and asking for this rate. My bill went from £135 a month to £64 for dual fuel based on the same consumption.Good luck.

One thing which springs out at me is how low your mortgage is at the moment - make sure in your planning you take into consideration the effect rising interest rates will have on what you pay.
