Hoover Just Set On Fire!

OK, this is a long one. The vacuum cleaner has just blown up! Literally blown up, I was hoovering the rug in the living room (it's not had heavy use as I only have laminate flooring and two rugs)!
It made a massive 'bang', started smoking, set off the smoke alarm and singed the rug! Everytime I hoover up it is cleaned and emptied, I live on my own so the use is minimal and it can't have got too hot given I was only hoovering the living room. To me this is a safety hazard, it was outside for over an hour before it stopped smoking!
It is a Hoover Alyx Cylinder Cycnonic Generation Future Hoover. I found the box and paperwork (minus receipt)! I remember I bought it from Comet so I took it back to them hoping they would be able to track the purchase but it seems I paid in cash and they have no record of it (had I paid on my card they could have tracked it)
I have the box, instruction manual, etc.. but no proof of purchase. The guy in Comet agreed something was not right with the Hoover and he agreed the burnt smell was not a good sign. Said basically nothing I can do. I've had it less than 6 months.
Any ideas?

If you can not provide proof that you only bought it 6 months ago to Comet, then you will have to contact the manufacturer to deal with the problem.0 -
I've been onto the hoover website and I am sure I registered the details online when I bought it. I will ring the helpline tomorrow as if I did I am sure they will have my details.0

Hello Comet Rep,
I managed to get a new one, luckily I did register it with Hoover and was able to locate a copy of the receipt - it turned up yesterday ironically in one of my handbags! I rung Hoover direct, the gave me a reference number for an exchange, took it back into Comet with the newly found receipt and was able to exchange it. Didn't want one of those same ones though, so paid an extra £25 to get one that a bit better that hopefully won't set on fire!!!
Cheers!
