Courses on JSA - has anyone done any

I did numeracy and literacy test at the jobcentre and I failed purely because I could not concentrate on the test plus have a lot of personal problems on top. I failed mainly on the numeracy side by a couple of questions.

The lady said I would have to go on a numeracy and literacy course at a college, and even though I told her I have exams for all of this from when I went to college years ago and school she still said I would have to attend this course.

Has anyone here ever had to attend this course?
If so what is it really like, be honest?
How many hours do you have or had to attend each day? on how many days per wk?
How long is the course for?

Do you deem it pointless and a waste of time and an insult to you?
Or do you think it helped you to forward your career or yourself?

Or did they make you do something else instead of this course?

Please tell as I am interested to know?

YOu dont say who the course is with, But I am assuming it will be with Learn direct, as JCP works in tandem with LD.
I took this course and, its nothing to worry about as you can learn at your own pace, when you want to and normally the staff.

Basically you pick the course you want (i.e. fork lift course, CSCS, etc) but you have to the literacy and numeracy first, as thats how they make their money.

When they send you on the literacy/numeracy course, take any certificates with you to the provider that are the equivelant of GCSE grade C or above. You should swiftly get referred back to the jobcentre.

I found all the courses they offered were really basic level and I refused due to the stupidity of the fact to get on one I would have had to do a basic numeracy and literacy course first, when I already had O and A levels... I rang Learn Direct anyway as the JC made me, who advised my qualifications would exclude me taking one anyway! The Job Centre should know this..

But after that they gave me funding to do a course (from the Advisor Discretionary Fund so up to £300) that I chose from a distance learning place, so worth asking for something you really want and not something that just ticks the boxes for them...
  • I did a ECDL (computer driving licence) through the Jobcentre. Had to commit to attending for 17.5 hours weekly, and got £10 week training premium. After the course finished the place was very keen to tie me into an unpaid work placement as that is how they get their money from the gov't.

I'm subscribing, as I want to do a Business and Adminstration course with them because I think I get it free. Does anyone know whether I can call them and ask to be put on the course or do I have to wait until my next signing on?
  • thanks all, I managed to sign back into this one again, I was having trouble and didnt think I would be able to anymore.

Well I dont know much about this. I dont know what courses they deal with, but getting some idea from other replies here.

All they said was that I would have to attend the college across the road.

Ring your job centre the one you sign with and ask them for the details.

Did they pay you extra for your fairs? or did you have to take it out of the £10 training fee they gave you?

IIRC they also paid travelling expenses, I didn't have any.
