hi
just started making some vanilla slices and I have forgotten to buy cornflour - can I just make the custard up and then thicken with flour/water mixture? or has anyone got an alternative recipe for the custard that doesnt require cornflour?
TIA

Google comes up with this - no idea if it'll work though
Looking again, I'm not sure it will - there's no thickening.

Could you use some gelatine maybe?0

i dont think the first one will work as 'proper' egg yolk custard is very thin and runny and for vanilla slice it needs to support itself.. the second one seems promising.. have you got cream you could whip and make jam and cream slices instead?0

thank you everyone for your posts- I sent OH out to the shop to buy some so ended up making it with cornflour. Now I need to perfect it, it tasted exactly like the shop bought custard but the texture was wrong - far far too thick so think I wil reduce the cornflour or perhaps add more milk next time but they tasted absolutely delicious and were sooooooo easy to make!0

That sounds gorgeous, do you have a recipe?
I love custard but have never made it into anything.
I also love custard doughnuts, must have a hunt for a recipe for that too.0 -

Years ago my Mum made a sort of 'Vanilla slice' which used cream crackers for the base and top with ordinary custard (Birds etc) made up very thick for the filling and then topped off with icing made with icing sugar and water. They were very popular and soon disappeared.0
