how? remove untracable x's name from mortgage

my partners ex husband left her and she got a devorce approx 15 years ago the solicitors at the time didn't sort out any thing with the house,she was left to bring up 2 kids and he has never payed a penny towards them or the mortgage,over the year to cut a long story short the arrears have accumilated and approx £120,000 is owed-most of which is arrears,the house is worth approx £150,000,at present we are paying £1030 per month INTREST ONLY which is very difficult,and are getting to a point were we have to remorgage,but to do this we have to remove x's name from mortgage,we cannot trace him and his familly will not say where he is,we believe him to be in america ,we have spoke to solicitors and CAB but nobody seems to know how we go about this,i cannot believe that this can be so hard to do,can someone please help us with this as we need to resolve the situation while there is still equity in the house,we are in an amazing location and do not want to be forced to move,neither of us have healthy credid due to past situations but are now in a possition to comfortably afford a normal mortgage.obviously were glad its never been reposessed but is there action we can take against the mortgage company as by not reposessing the house so much debt has been forced upon my partner?
