Does anyone have any pointers on how to get into a job like train driving? Is it all 'on the job' training or can you take a course elsewhere? Does already working for a rail company in another capacity help? Any tips much appreciated.

There are very few opportunities to enter the rail industry as an untrained driver and you should be looking to get any job on the railway and then progress eg platform assistant - conductor - driver or traincare/maintenance - shunter - driver. Railway recruitment is notoriously slow but there are wide opportunities for progress. The current MD of First ScotRail started as a signaller.
If you do want to start as eg platform assistant or conductor then frontline customer service, cash handling, and working to rules and regulations or in a safety critical environment is regarded as preferred experience.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Depending on where you are, I know some companies advertise on their websites:

As a rule, most rail companies recruit trainee drivers from within though.
Having just left southeastern 6 months ago after 15 years, I know this!Fog on The Tyne isn't mine all mine... but if I wanted it, I'd want it with a discount code.0 -
I am a train driver - by all means PM me if you want.
You would need to pass an assessment to see if you have the relevant skills, then a medical. Approx 10 months classroom, practical experience and route learning followed by your five day exam and then you get to drive on your own.
Try www.how2become.co.uk/train_driver as there is an excellent cd rom you can buy with loads of information about it. Costs about £15 - money well spent. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0
